What Is a Master of Business Administration?
A master of business administration (MBA) sharpens the skills of aspiring managers and business professionals. The MBA dates back to the early 20th century. As the nation was becoming increasingly industrialized, companies were in need of professionals with strong management skills to lead administrative operations and corporate initiatives in the workforce. The world’s first MBA degree — offered by Harvard University in 1908 — approached the concept of management from a scientific point of view; the degree identified a uniform set of skills to standardize the training for business administrators in any industry or field.

Since its introduction to industrial America, the MBA has evolved into a diverse and comprehensive program for professionals in all areas of business and commerce. Today, the degree is meant to broaden students’ conceptual skills in critical thinking, leadership, communication, and problem-solving, while also allowing them to pursue a particular concentration or forge their own path as an entrepreneur.

Many schools offer concentrations in popular areas of business administration to help students strengthen specialized career skills. Traditional MBA specializations include finance, marketing, accounting, and international business, with additional options emerging in information technology management, healthcare leadership, and entrepreneurship.

Why Should You Pursue an MBA?
In today’s rapidly evolving economy, the MBA ranks among the most popular professional degrees around the globe. MBA programs blend advanced skills in business and management with practical experience to prepare graduates to start or advance in a management career in virtually any field they choose. Employers may prefer MBA graduates because of the breadth and depth of their professional skills, field experience, and insider knowledge of business networks and relationships.

What Do You Learn in an MBA Program?
Business professionals value MBAs because of their versatility, comprehensive curriculum, and practical application. To prepare graduates for the ins and outs of leadership positions at small companies and large corporations alike, MBA coursework covers all aspects of business administration. Students learn about marketing, accounting, strategy, and finance. Soft skills, such as communication and leadership, are also developed.

The best online MBAs combine formal classroom training with hands-on learning. Students apply newfound knowledge and skills during simulation exercises, collaboration and discussion with peers, and examination of case studies. Final capstones often require students to develop a mock business, present a professional portfolio, or put together a mock proposal for an actual client.

A solid MBA foundation prepares graduates to enter the ever-changing business sector, but these graduate-level abilities can serve beyond business applications. Skills in problem-solving, strategic research analysis, and effective communication translate to managerial potential in many industries and environments.

In an MBA program, participants learn from other business professionals. MBA faculty usually hold extensive leadership experience, in addition to a terminal degree. They bring unique experiences, perspectives, and ideas to the classroom, enriching textbook subjects with practical knowledge and expertise.

What Skills Do You Learn in an MBA Program?
Leadership and Motivation: Management is about making a team more efficient. Leadership is about motivating a team to work toward a common goal. MBA students learn leadership skills through a combination of psychology, sociology, and communication studies.
Teamwork: Successful business leaders know how to work effectively with other individuals, as well as in groups. Online MBA programs foster development of teamwork skills by enrolling students in cohorts and encouraging or requiring collaborative participation with other students.
Communication and Public Speaking: Interpersonal skills are among the most vital soft skills for business leaders. While an online MBA may offer less opportunity for direct in-person contact with peers and professors, students can still enhance their communication and public speaking skills through theoretical study, message boards, and presentation delivery.
Problem-solving: Effective leaders must know how to address issues and solve problems under pressure. Online MBA students learn indispensable problem-solving skills through class exercises, studying practical business challenges, and completing coursework.
Explore MBA Programs In Over 30 Concentrations

You may still be wondering about what an MBA can do for you. For students interested in business, earning an MBA can be beneficial at all stages of their career. Those just starting an MBA program can develop valuable networking and entrepreneurial skills for future business ventures, while those nearing graduation gain work experience through internships and/or job assistance programs.

After graduation, MBAs provide graduates an advantage in an increasingly competitive workforce. Additionally, MBAs are generally more versatile than other graduate-level business degrees; they offer a variety of concentrations and specialized coursework, allowing students to customize their studies according to their interests and career goals.

The benefits of an MBA depend on a student’s individual career goals. MBAs could be ideal for students with undergraduate degrees looking to advance in their current role in the workforce, as well as those pursuing a career change. Students considering an MBA who already have a business-related undergraduate degree can sharpen their skills through continued education in a concentration of their choice. Students with non-business undergraduate degrees, conversely, can use an MBA to kickstart a career as an entrepreneur or manager.

Whatever one’s previous education, many MBA programs require applicants to have several years of work experience as a condition of acceptance. While undergraduates with little experience may still be eligible for admission, MBA programs generally favor experienced candidates — a cohort group made up of students with a shared minimum experience level tends to maximize the benefits for all involved.

Earning an MBA is a major accomplishment that offers significant benefits to those willing to make the commitment. However, even the admissions process can feel challenging. Expect to plan ahead to gather letters of recommendation, write essays, and take the GMAT or GRE test.

Once accepted, MBA candidates will likely need to devote much of their time to pursuing their degrees. Rigorous coursework, homework, and internship/fieldwork commitments may leave little time for anything else outside of school. While it may not be realistic for everyone to stop working to attend school full time, trying to work while completing an MBA is often quite difficult. Pursuing a more flexible online MBA may be a sensible option for those looking to maintain a steady income and keep their job while meeting the demands of an MBA program.

Careers for MBA Graduates
Whether you’re looking to advance in your current job, find new employment opportunities, or transition into an entirely different career, an MBA represents the gold standard for business professionals and prospective employers. Coursework is designed to provide the soft skills employers desire most — including communication, leadership, problem-solving, and time management — as well as experience in a particular specialty of a student’s choice. The possibilities are nearly endless for MBA graduates, whether they aspire to a career in a traditional business setting (e.g., accounting, finance, or marketing) or in an emerging field (e.g., IT, energy, or global commerce).

Salaries for MBA Graduates
One of the most commonly cited reasons for earning a graduate degree is the likelihood of increased earning potential. However, not every master’s degree holder earns a premium salary relative to the income of a bachelor’s degree holder. Therefore, prospective graduate students should calculate their own personal return on investment. In weighing the true worth and benefit of a degree, several factors should be considered, including program cost, long-term and short-term income potential, and lifetime benefits.

More students earn master’s degrees in business than in any other field. The total cost of an MBA program can vary widely depending on the school you attend. For example, an MBA from the University of the People — an online school without traditional tuition — costs approximately $2,500. Utica College advertises an online MBA that costs approximately $20,000. Online students at George Washington University shell out six-figure investments for their MBA, with tuition costs alone reaching well above $100,000.

Short-term and long-term ROIs are impacted by individual salaries and how long it takes to pay off school debt. Students should remember that more expensive programs do not necessarily lead to higher-paying jobs. Base salaries for class of 2019 MBA graduates average around $85,000. Certain MBA concentrations can help increase the ROI by preparing students for high-paying business administration jobs in healthcare, finance, and marketing.

In short, there is no one-size-fits-all formula to calculate the ROI of every MBA program. Students must consider their own finances and projected degree costs, along with potential earnings and job growth projections in their local economy.

The MBA Curriculum
As you look at MBA programs, you will likely become familiar with the basic structure of the average curriculum. While programs vary slightly, there are typically several types of classes that learners complete while earning an MBA, including foundation, core, and elective or concentration courses. Although it may feel overwhelming, students are encouraged to look into the different courses they can take before enrolling to get a better idea of what they might learn in an MBA program. Read on to explore the various types of MBA courses.

Foundation Classes
MBA foundation coursework is important for undergraduates entering an MBA with a non-business degree. Classes include subjects like business finance and statistics. These help program administrators assess an individual’s level of competency while also helping students build general professional skills they’ll need in the workforce.

Core Classes
Core courses in an MBA program explore crucial skills for business professionals, including accounting, economics, business strategy, and finance. Soft skills like leadership and communication may also be included in this category. Regardless of a student’s concentration, they must satisfy a set number of core credits related to key concepts designed to benefit business administrators.

Electives/Concentration Courses
Electives and concentration courses vary from one person to the next and largely depend on a student’s area of interest. These types of courses provide in-depth study in a focused area of business administration to prepare students for their particular career path. Common concentrations include accounting, entrepreneurship, and information technology management. The available pool of electives depends largely on the program –some schools allow students to choose from a wide variety of interdepartmental courses, while others require students to choose from a smaller group of business-oriented special interest topics.

Capstone
The capstone or final project is crucial to the process of earning an MBA. Encompassing many strategic management concepts, a capstone may be delivered in a variety of ways depending on a program’s individual requirements. Whether a program calls for students to create a mock business from the ground up, develop a business proposal with a real-life client in mind, or present a professional portfolio, capstone courses provide students with an opportunity to fully realize the skills they developed over the course of the program.

Example Curriculum
While programs vary from school to school, this guide uses the Charlton College of Business at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth as an example of a top MBA curriculum. The following sections discuss courses that are offered at UMass Dartmouth and outline what students can expect to learn in each class. Though the MBA curriculum at UMass Dartmouth may be similar to other programs, the following is just a representative example. Be sure to check the websites and/or course catalogs of your prospective schools for details on your programs of choice.

Foundation Classes
Foundations classes in UMass Dartmouth’s MBA program include financial accounting, statistical analysis, and economics concepts for managers. These courses target business graduate majors from non-business backgrounds. Each course is lecture-based and presents an overview of the basics of each subject in the context of business and commerce. Coursework stresses external financial reporting, applicable economic theories like micro- and macroeconomics, and case studies related to statistics.

Core Classes
UMass Dartmouth’s MBA requires 21 credits of core classes, including accounting for decision making, advanced organizational behavior, IT management, and marketing strategy. These lecture-based courses emphasize experiential learning and student-centered discussion to reinforce crucial problem-solving, decision making, and strategic management skills. Core courses explore the finance, marketing, and operations analysis skills required to succeed as a business professional.

Electives/Concentration Courses
UMass Dartmouth offers MBA candidates a choice of 10 concentrations: accounting, business analytics, finance, marketing, leadership, supply chain management and information systems, environmental policy, health systems management, international business, and public management. Students may also create their own concentration by selecting 3-4 approved electives as their focus area; these classes must total nine elective credits. UMass Dartmouth offers a variety of relevant electives in special interest areas, such as international financial management; interactive marketing; and leading, motivating, and empowering others.

Capstone
The strategic management capstone at UMass Dartmouth is the culmination of core requirements for the MBA degree. With a focus on developing management skills for the global business environment, this capstone course prompts students to explore competition among businesses and consider strategies for improving operations in a growing international market. The capstone requires students to formulate and implement a strategic plan of their own design.

How Long Does It Take to Get an MBA?
The length of time it takes to get an MBA depends on many factors. An accelerated schedule allows you to graduate faster than a part-time program, for example, but this also depends on what options are available at a particular school. Some programs offer students the opportunity to take more than one class at a time, while others may have strict mandates about the maximum course load taken each semester. Students typically need to complete 30-60 credits, although learners who do not hold a bachelor’s in business must usually satisfy additional prerequisites, which can extend the length of time it takes to graduate. When choosing an MBA, students should select a program that matches their particular scheduling needs.

Marketing directors oversee all aspects of marketing operations for a business, company, or nonprofit organization. They may serve in an executive or supervisory capacity, directing marketing, advertising, and promotions. Many marketing directors with an advanced degree and qualifications can earn six-figure salaries in a senior position.
Vice presidents of IT companies oversee internal and external operations of their organizations at the highest level. The executive decisions made by an IT vice president direct operations for an entire organization, including budgeting and resource allocation and outreach efforts. They may also meet with board members and shareholders. Vice presidents and other top executives are among the highest paid workers in the U.S., and MBA graduates with extensive work experience can expect favorable employment and salary opportunities in these roles.
I was fortunate that business school was on my radar early on, and I always knew I would likely want to pursue an MBA at some point. When my learning started to plateau at Google, I was ready for my next challenge, and it felt like the right time.
All in all, it was probably a two-year process: one year considering if an MBA was right for me and one year studying for the GMAT, getting the score I needed for the schools I was applying to, and then applying. It was a huge personal growth process as the applications require a lot of self-reflection. I was lucky enough to get into my dream school, so the choice was an easy one.
It was the best two years of my life so far. I learned so much — not just about business, but also about life. I got an immense amount of feedback and learned more about who I am, how I come across, and who I want to be. I made friendships that will last a lifetime. The hardest part was my accounting classes, hands down.
What Is a Master of Business Administration?
A master of business administration (MBA) is a graduate degree that provides theoretical and practical training for business or investment management. An MBA is designed to help graduates gain a better understanding of general business management functions. An MBA degree can have a general focus or a specific focus in fields such as accounting, finance, or marketing, and relationship management.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
An MBA is a graduate business degree focused on management.
MBA students can also focus on other aspects of business, like finance or risk management.
Many schools now offer specialty programs, like sports management, entrepreneurship, the entertainment business, or healthcare management.
Executive MBA programs are available for experienced professionals who cannot commit to a full-time schedule.
Understanding Master of Business Administration (MBA)
A master of business administration (MBA) is a level up from an undergraduate business degree and generally places the graduate well above those with only undergraduate degrees. Most major universities and colleges provide MBA programs, which usually last two years. To get into an MBA program, an applicant needs to take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and be accepted by the program based on its selection criteria.

It is not uncommon to gain professional experience before applying to elite MBA programs.
MBA programs typically include core classes in accounting, management, finance, marketing, and business law. Management training is at the heart of any MBA curriculum, with a focus on leadership, planning, business strategy, organizational behavior, and the more human sides of running a large or small business.

Increasingly, MBA programs are broadening their focus to include training in international business and to focus on the responsibilities and corporate accountability of businesses within their communities.

The MBA degree is seen as essential to enter certain fields, including strategic planning, hedge funds, and private equity firms. Other financial services fields, however, may no longer consider an MBA an entry-level degree to get started.

MBA Vs Executive MBA: Which Is Better?
Specialized MBA Programs
While MBA candidates can focus on one of the core disciplines of the degree, such as management or finance, many MBA programs allow students to develop concentrations in specific industries. For example, an MBA student might specialize in sports management, entrepreneurship, the entertainment business, or healthcare management.

Even within a management specialty, MBA degrees can allow a concentration on information technology, hospitality, education, or criminal justice. Some MBA programs team up with various professional healthcare programs, such as nursing schools, to offer joint degrees.

Special Considerations
Specialized MBA programs are also available for students whose lives and careers do not permit them to attend school full time. For example, executive MBA programs are designed for working professionals hoping to add to their credentials and qualifications. These courses of study typically schedule classes for nights and weekends, sometimes also requiring short residencies of intensive coursework.

Executive MBA programs are typically only open to candidates who already have substantial professional experience, and they thus tend to focus on more advanced topics such as leadership development.

During this type of education students communicate with the faculty and other students via e-mail, electronic forums, videoconferencing, chat rooms, bulletin boards, instant messaging and other forms of computer-based interaction.

The programmes often include a online training system and tools to produce a virtual classroom. The tuition fees for distance learning vary from institution to programme to country. Business Administration
United States
An MBA (Master’s of Business Administration) is amongst the most popular of graduate college degrees, and with good reason: constant demand in the job market for the skills and knowledge gained. (Approximately 23-25% of masters degrees granted by Title IV institutions between academic years 2009-10 and 2017-18, inclusive, were in business, including but not limited to MBAs.)

At the very least, graduates of an MBA program will gain advanced leadership and management skills, and a deeper understanding of business practices and operations. An MBA also opens up many opportunities for career advancement, greater job responsibilities, and higher earnings.

Regardless of why you’re interested in an MBA, with an online MBA program, no longer do you have to necessarily give up working while completing your degree – especially in a part-time program. This college review list looks at 25 of the most affordable online or hybrid MBA degree programs available.

Affordable Degrees Ranking Methodology
Article data comes from three sources: NCES (National Center for Education Statistics); IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System) Data Center; individual college websites. The first two sources are maintained by the Dept. of Education and may be 1-2 years behind the third source. Always refer to a college’s website for details, or contact the admissions department.

Step 1: Query NCES for public or private, nonprofit institutions offering “distance” graduate programs in “Business Administration and Management, General.”
Step 2: Combine the results with IPEDS average graduate tuition data of colleges offering graduate distance degree programs.
Step 3: Sort (ascending) potential candidates for this review article using IPEDS average graduate tuition data.
Step 4: Manually select 25 colleges offering one or more online/ hybrid MBA degree programs. Filter out candidates with only a certificate program or otherwise no MBA degree.
Step 5: If actually in-state program cost (tuition and mandatory per-credit and/or per-semester fees only) are not explicitly specified on a college’s website, estimate the cost based on tuition and fee values.
Step 6: Sort final 25 colleges based on estimated program cost, descending.
NOTES:

Actual program cost for a university online MBA program may vary from what is specified in this article based on many factors such as individual financial aid received, other fees and costs, number of credits taken per a given semester, etc.
Some MBA programs listed below have multiple tracks/ concentrations with differing credit allotments. Estimated tuition is calculated, if necessary, based on the credits of the “general” track.
Some colleges have different program costs based on the number of credits taken per semester. Since six credits per semester potentially qualifies a student for FAFSA financial aid, we have used this to estimate program cost, for such colleges.
For programs with costs varying by semester, we’ve used the latest Spring or Fall rates, as available, or Summer rates otherwise.
While we’ve applied the above rules to estimate program cost, some institutions listed may offer a lower cost through per-term tuition options.
Some costs listed are only approximations based on information available from each institution’s Web site. There may be additional fees and incidental costs (books, food, lodging, transportation, etc.), and overall charges are subject to change.

Frequently Asked Questions
Still have questions about an online Master’s of Business Administration degree? We’ve answered some of the more popular questions below.

Types of Programs
Full-time vs Part-time: Any given online MBA programs might be full- or part-time, sometimes both, with the latter making it easier to continue working while studying — or to fulfill any other time-restricting obligations.
Hybrid vs Fully Online: Fully/100% online programs offer online courses with no on-campus or other in-person requirements (e.g., field work, apprenticeships, thesis defense, etc.). Hybrid programs offer online courses but have some in-person requirements. Blended programs have a mix of online and in-person courses, and may have in-person requirements.
Synchronous vs Asynchronous: Synchronous courses are broadcast/ streamed at a predetermined time, requiring live attendance, albeit remotely. Asynchronous classes might have a live session but are archived and available on-demand, at the student’s convenience.

Admission Requirements
COST
MBA program costs can vary greatly from college to college. Programs listed in this article range from about $9.5K to $30K, though others may be less or even as high as $60K. Institutions vary on how program cost is calculated. Here are some of the ways:

Flat rate per course credit, plus mandatory per-credit/ per-semester fees.
Flat rate per semester, plus mandatory fees.
Flat rate for the whole program, with mandatory fees included.
Variable rate based on number of credits taken per semester, sometimes with a cap after a certain quantity (e.g., lower per-credit rate).
Subsidized. Example: A graduate military academy may cover student costs; however, competition for such schools is very high.
Note: All degree programs have fees, but some may have mandatory per-course and/or per-semester fees. There may be additional fees as well, possibly waivable.

If you need financial assistance, look into FAFSA federal student loans for graduate programs. If you’re employed, your employer may have education initiatives. If they’re willing to cover your costs, whether up front or a later reimbursement, either way it essentially amounts to free college tuition.

GRE AND GMAT
The GRE and GMAT are two popular student assessment tests for graduate program admission. More MBA schools than not probably require scores for one of these tests from applicants. The GMAT is more traditional, given that it was designed specifically for graduate business school admission, while the GRE is a general graduate entrance exam.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Each B-school has a slightly different process, although here is summary of common steps, approximately in order:

Prepare for entrance exams. The GMAT is recommended for MBA programs; however, the GRE is suitable for any grad subject. Some schools also require scores from a test of English language proficiency (such as TOEFL), if you are not born in an English-speaking country. Check with your schools of interest for waiver options.
Register for and take an entrance exam.
Fill out and submit your FAFSA application online, for federal loans for grad programs, if you’re qualified. Otherwise, check if your employer will cover costs (and to let them know your plans so that you can ensure no scheduling conflicts between work and college).
You will likely need to write a personal essay, sometimes two, for B-Schools. These essays are your opportunity to show your relevant background, and to pitch why you’re a fit as a grad student at a particular school. You may need to customize your essay(s) for each B-School.
Select your academic and professional references, from employers, clients or educators. Usually, 2-3 references suffice, and they will likely have to send their letter of reference directly to each B-School.
Update your resume, to highlight your relevant work experience. Note that some MBA programs require as much as 10 years.
Consider hiring a general college consultant, who can help you find B schools suited to your career goals. Also consider an admissions consultant to help improve your chances of acceptance.
Make a college shortlist, based on program flexibility, outcomes, and your own MBA-related career goals. Use the list of online MBA programs in this article as a starting point. Visting campuses may be unnecessary for an online MBA; however, this is a personal choice. Revise your notes, and make sure you have your final school selections before you start applying.
For each school on your shortlist, complete and submit your application and fee, along with any required materials (transcripts, essays, letters of recommendation, test scores, etc.), as per the outlined process on their website. Make sure to meet the application deadlines – applying well in advance is even better.
Interviews. Schools may require an admissions interview to get to know you better, to determine if you are a fit. Such interviews may be in-person, over the phone, or possibly on a Zoom or Skype video call, etc.
Wait for responses from each admissions department. If you get accepted to more than one school, determine the pros and cons to you personally for each program, to help you decide which B-School to accept.
To find out more, search for “MBA application process” using your favorite Internet search engine. Both USNWR and Princeton Review have suitable guides.

ARE THERE SCHOOLS WHERE NO GRE OR GMAT ARE REQUIRED? EXAMPLES?
Yes. Several such B-Schools are in the reviews portion of this article. Another example, Western Governors University, is listed in the Top-Searched MBA Programs section, below. Currently, due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, assessment tests may be difficult to complete. As such, some B-schools have temporarily waived test scores for the Fall 2020 starting semester.

Thesis vs Non-thesis Programs
Graduate programs typically have some capstone experience or a thesis, though some are pure coursework. For MBA programs, a capstone might be in the form of an individual or group project, or something else. Masters programs with a thesis are often suited to students who plan to follow up with a doctorate.

Sample Course Requirements
Most MBA programs have mandatory core courses that cover topics such as accounting, business analytics, ethics, management, marketing, economics and finance, amongst others. Other popular topics are supply chain management (SCM), management information systems, organizational behavior. Depending on available tracks/ concentrations, there may be elective courses in any number of other subjects, including healthcare, law, sciences, IT, environment, etc.

What are the advantages and disadvantages to an online MBA?
An online degree in any topic requires self-discipline. Fortunately, an online MBA with asynchronous courses allows students to study on their own schedule. This is one of the biggest selling points of an online masters, besides the fact that many costs of an on-campus program are eliminated (moving, room and board, sometimes textbooks, etc.)

One disadvantage used to be employer bias against online degrees. Fortunately, most educational institutions do not make a distinction between online and on-campus programs on student diplomas. Otherwise an online degree is typically as valuable as the equivalent on-campus program.

How long does it take to complete an online MBA?
Full-time MBA programs can often be completed in 12-15 months, and part-time programs in 18-24 months. Programs with higher credit requirements may take as long as three years part-time.

Can an Online MBA be completed in 1 year?
Yes. In fact, many B-schools have a 12-month full-time online MBA program. However, it will likely be difficult to also maintain full-time work hours.

What can you do with an online MBA?
Any MBA degree adds knowledge and skills applicable to leadership and management roles in many fields and sectors. These can also be applied to entrepreneurial endeavors such as starting a business, or towards consulting for clients. Completing an MBA degree is milestone in itself. What comes after could be a wide range of career opportunities for an MBA graduate. The fact is that there are many possible jobs that you’ll be qualified for with an MBA, so the following list is only a starting point. With a specialized MBA concentration, there are field-specific opportunities as well.

How much can I make after completing my online MBA?
How much you can earn straight out of an MBA program is dependent on several factors, including:

MBA program taken, and possibly program accreditation. A prestigious school may earn you extra.
Years of relevant work experience.
Your pre-MBA salary.
Job location.
The industry/ sector of your job, as well as your specific role. Finance and executive roles may earn more than a general management position. An MBA paired with a graduate or undergrad degree in a non-business topic might give you additional earnings potential.
Any particular concentration taken. General Management, for example, is a popular choice, due to employer demand (according to The Princeton Review).
Any other degrees that you hold, particularly in other subjects.
Because of so many factors, specific salary numbers are difficult to state. However, earning upwards of, say, $300K out of grad school is not unheard of, but is rare. In terms of percentages, USNWR reports that average salaries for online MBA students circa 2015-2016 increased by about 22% within three months of graduation. Other more recent sources indicate that while some new salaries may be double pre-MBA salaries, 30-50% higher is more common, which may jump to 80% after several years.

Specific numbers: a median base salary of $105K was estimated (for 2018), according to a survey by GMAC. Also check Payscale.com for a breakdown of average median salaries for MBA holders by job, with financial analyst at the bottom of the list at about $62K, and CFO at the top with over $146K.

What kind of networking opportunities are available with an online MBA program?
Networking opportunities for online MBA students vary by B-School, but typically include: peer collaboration (online and in-person); connecting with a mentor representing a school; connecting with alumni; etc.

Do any Ivy League Schools offer an online MBA?
Yes. While Brown University has no B-School, it has partnered with IE Business School (based in Madrid, Spain) to offer a hybrid MBA. Some Ivy League B-Schools do offer relevant online courses in business or entrepreneurship, including via MOOCs. For example, Harvard Business School Online and Wharton Online (University of Pennsylvania).

Attending an accredited school may allow you to apply for financial aid, whether the school you select is a traditional classroom or online program.

Are there prerequisites?
Undergraduate: A strong college preparatory high school education is a good start for your business administration degree program. Courses in English, communications and social sciences are recommended. Mathematics courses, at least through pre-calculus, are highly desirable. If your school offers computer technology classes make sure you enroll, as these skills will be integral through college and into your career.

Graduate: A completed, four-year bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related business field will prepare you for graduate school.

GRE and GMAT: The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is not required for admission to degree programs in the U.S. However, you may submit a score for review with your admission materials.

What accreditation is there for my program?
Accreditation shows that an institution or program meets standards of quality set forth by an accrediting agency, and that it is committed not only to meet those standards but to continuously seek ways in which to improve the quality of education and training provided. There are two types of educational accreditation: institutional and specialized.

The three main specialized accreditors for business administration degree programs include:

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB): AACSB International accredits degree programs in business administration and accounting at bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate levels

Accreditation Council for Business Schools & Programs(ACBSP): ACBSP accredits business, accounting and business-related programs at the associate, bachelors, masters and doctorate degree levels world

International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE): The IACBE accredits business programs that lead to associate, bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees. It does not accredit institutions that only offer associate degrees in business

Institutional accreditation is provided by regional and national associations of schools and colleges, such as The Higher Learning Commission. Institutional accreditation is provided by regional and national associations of schools and colleges. There are six regional associations, each named after the region in which it operates (Middle States, New England, North Central, Northwest, Southern, Western). Learn more about accreditation.

Attending an accredited school may allow you to apply for financial aid, whether the school you select is a traditional classroom or online program.

What should expect my student-teacher ratio to be?
Students in undergraduate business administration programs will find a higher student-teacher ratio as many preparatory classes are often lecture-oriented and you can expect class size to be larger. As a rule, the further you progress in your education and field of specialty the smaller you should expect the ratio to become.

biz-admin-1-in-14
The ideal student-teacher ratio is around 14:1 according to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Schools survey.

Online Programs
One classic criticism of online programs is that you’re isolated from your teachers and classmates, but the opposite is often true. You may actually interact more with instructors and peers in online discussions, social media venues, and emails, than in a traditional classroom setting. The National Center for Education Statistics ranks the top 64 online universities on a number of factors, including student-teacher ratio. They found a range of 7:1–94:1 for their top 64 not-for-profit and for-profit schools.

Now that you’ve got the facts on business administration degrees, it’s time to make the first move toward the business career that’s calling you. Discover the program that’s just right for you.

What Is an Online Bachelor’s in Business Administration Degree?
Students who earn online bachelor’s in business administration (BBA) degrees can pursue positions in management and finance. Bachelor-level business administration degrees meet the minimum education requirement for most business jobs, though graduates interested in executive positions may need to earn MBAs.

Online business degrees help students develop the skills needed for management careers. Employers consistently rank marketing, sales, and business analytics — all of which are included in BBA core requirements — among the most desirable job skills. Online business degrees also typically offer management, finance, marketing, and entrepreneurship concentrations.

What Is the Difference Between a BBA, BSBA, and BABA?
Students pursuing online bachelor’s degrees in business administration can choose from three types of degrees: BBA, bachelor of science in business administration (BSBA), or bachelor of arts in business administration (BABA).

BBA programs typically focus on business and management principles, while BSBA programs emphasize technical business skills, covering mathematics, statistics, and science. BABA programs balance foundational business courses with more general liberal arts courses. All three degrees can lead to successful business careers.

Choosing an Online Bachelor’s in Business Administration Program
There are several factors you should consider when choosing between online business administration degrees. First, make sure your potential program is an accredited online business degree; without accreditation, your degree might not be recognized by employers or graduate schools.

Next, check that the program offers concentrations that suit your unique goals and career aspirations, while still using a learning format that works for your schedule.
